Translingual

Etymology

Lanii (genitive of Lanius, shrike genus) + -soma (body), from the supposed shrike-like appearance.

Proper noun

Laniisoma n

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Tityridae Laniisoma elegans, the shrike-like laniisoma, also known as the shrike-like cotinga or elegant mourner.

Usage notes

  • The vernacular names are especially misleading or unhelpful, the bird not being very "shrike-like" and no longer being in genus Cotinga or family Cotingidae. The mourners are in several genera, not all in Tityridae.
