From Middle High German kupfe, from Old High German kupfa (cap, bonnet), probably from Late Latin cuppa (cup). The modern consonantism is Central and Low German; compare Middle Low German koppe. Cognate with Dutch kop (cup; head), English cup. Related also with Kopf (head).
