First attested as duabus villis que crimpen nuncupantur, sitis super meruede et super yssel in 1277. Derived from a term cognate to Old Saxon krampo (hook), Middle Dutch krampe (hook) and the hydronym IJssel. The toponym contrasts with Krimpen aan de Lek.
