Etymology

Coined by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in 1848 in the Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei (“Manifesto of the Communist Party”), from French communisme (coined in 1840), formed from commun (“common”), from Latin commūnis, and the suffix -isme (“-ism”).
