First attested as lidlem in 1317. Borrowed from West Frisian Kleaster-Lidlum, derived from kleaster (“monastery”) and a compound toponym of Old Frisian Liudila (“a personal name”) and hēm (“home, settlement”). Named after a former Premonstratensian abbey.
