Attested as Klein-Valkenisse in 1838-1857. Compound of klein (“small, lesser”) and a compound toponym derived from Middle Dutch Valke (“a personal name”) and nisse (“headland, spit”). The element klein was added to distinguish the settlement from Groot-Valkenisse.
