From Ukrainian Херсо́н (Xersón), named in memory of the Ancient Greek colony of Χερσόνησος (Khersónēsos). Compare Russian Херсоне́с (Xersonɛ́s, “the city of Chersonesos”), Old East Slavic Корсу́нь (Korsúnĭ, “Chersonesos”), Russian Херсо́н (Xersón, “Kherson”).
