Of Balto-Slavic origin, from Lithuanian karõsas, ultimately from a Slavic language, such as Russian карась (karasʹ, crucian carp), itself perhaps borrowed from Medieval Latin coracinus (kind of river fish).[1][2] Also see English crucian.
