From Old Norse Jamtaland, from jamti (“Jamt”) + land (“land”). According to the saga of Haakon the Good, named after Ketill jamti, the legendary first settler of this landscape. Cognate with Icelandic Jamtaland, Swedish Jämtland and Danish Jemtland.
