From Old English Wiht, Wihte iegland, Latin Vectis (c.150), from Proto-Celtic *ixtis (literally nether), akin to Old Irish icht (nether, bottom), Muir n-Icht (English Channel, literally the nether sea), referring to the fact that the Isle of Wight is one of the southernmost islands of the British Isles.
