From Old English Wiht, Wihte iegland, Latin Vectis (c.150), from Proto-Celtic *ixtis (literally “nether”), akin to Old Irish icht (“nether, bottom”), Muir n-Icht (“English Channel”, literally “the nether sea”), referring to the fact that the Isle of Wight is one of the southernmost islands of the British Isles.
