Imker

German

Etymology

From German Low German [Term?]. Obviously related to Imme (bee). There are two theories concerning the details of the development:

  1. From Middle Low German immenkar (beehive), which is a compound with Middle Low German kar (basket). The component -ker < -kar would then have been secondarily associated with the Low German suffix -ker for occupations (compare Böttcher).
  2. Directly derived from Imme with the mentioned suffix. Cognate with Dutch imker.

Either way, ultimately from Proto-West Germanic *imbjakaʀjō.
