Idaard

Dutch

Etymology

Potentially attested as edenwerfa in 944, attested with certainty as etwerth in 1314. Borrowed from West Frisian Idaerd, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Eda (a personal name) and werf (artificial mound used for habitation). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to wert (terp, artificial mound used for habitation).
