First attested as de horsne in 1242. Etymology unknown. Not a compound of Middle Dutch hors (“horse, Equus ferus caballus”) and winne (“pasture, meadow”). Perhaps derived from a term related to Middle Dutch hore (“mud, clay”) with -sna suffix.
