Hoog Soeren

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as suornom in 814-815. Etymology uncertain. Compound of hoog (high) and a second element that is perhaps related to Old Swedish sôr (barren, dry), Middle Dutch soor (dry, rough, sore). A derivation from a contracted form of Middle Dutch suder (southern, south) is not backed up by the oldest attestations of the toponym.
