Etymology

First attested as homoet in 1347. Etymology unknown. Perhaps a compound of Middle Dutch ho (high) and made (hayfield, meadow) that underwent a vowel shift, maybe under the (folk-etymological) influence of Middle Dutch homoet (conceit, hubris). Compare Hoogmeien.
