Potentially attested as tobbenrode bi gelene in 1280-1290, attested with certainty as hobbelroie in 1447. Compound of Old Dutch Hubbilo (“a personal name”) (derived from Hugbald or Hubert) and rode (“land cleared of trees”). Compare Hubbelrath.
