A Celtic name, from Gaulish elu (“gain, prosperity”), from Proto-Celtic *elu, from Proto-Indo-European *pelh₁u- (“many”); and etu- (“terrain, grassland”), which is cognate with Old Irish íath (“grassland, territory”).
