Etymology
Second element is land, first element of disputed origin:
- From German heilig (“holy”), as in Middle High German Heiligland (“holy land”)
- From the North Frisian for high, similar to Hallig; hinted by the Heligolanders' self-designation of Halunder.[1]
- Related to the legendary hero Helgi, identical to the Old Norse name Helgi.[2]
