Heimtier n (strong, genitive Heimtieres or Heimtiers, plural Heimtiere)

  1. An animal from an animal shelter
  2. A formal term for a pet, as opposed to a farm animal or a wild animal. In 1986 this definition of the term became a law in article 1 of the European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, German: Europäische Übereinkommen zum Schutz von Heimtieren
