Etymology
First attested as hadewartswoude and hadewertswoude in 1280-1287. Compound of Middle Dutch Hadewart (“a personal name”) and wout (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The compound element Rijndijk (derived from the hydronym Rijn and dijk (“levee”)) was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from Hazerswoude-Dorp.
