Etymology

Literally, “Havana on the Waal [river]”, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the river Waal which flows through the city and the fact that Nijmegen is (not in the least due to the leftist student body of its university) a left-leaning city. Compare the similarly-formed Manhattan aan de Maas.
