Guyri
Norwegian Nynorsk
Alternative forms
- Guiri, Gýri (alternative spellings)
Etymology
From Old Norse Guðríðr, from Guðfríðr. The diphthong is due to the -ð- getting a j sound before r, akin to veir from veðr.
Pronunciation
- (Setesdal) IPA(key): [²ɡuyʷre̯i], [²ɡuyʷrɪ]
Usage notes
Because the diphthong in this name is identical to the Setesdal pronunciation of long y, is has often been written like Gyri (i.e. Gýri).
