First attested as de maatschappij Griendtsveen in 1887. Compound of van de Griendt (“a surname”) and veen (“peat bog, marsh”). Named after Joannes van de Griendt (1804-1884), an investor who developed the lands around Griendtsveen and Helenaveen.
