Potentially attested as gottincheim around 825-842, attested with certainty as Gôtum in 1718. Borrowed from West Frisian Goattum, derived in turn from Old Frisian Gote (“a personal name”) or Gottinge (“a surname”) and hēm (“home, settlement”).
