Gijzel

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as ghesele in 1285. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Old Dutch sele (hall home) prefixed with the collectivising prefix ge-. An alternative hypothesis posits a derivation from a compound of either Old Dutch Giso (a personal name) or Middle Dutch gees (infertile) and lo (light forest).
