Gaastmeer
Dutch
Etymology
First attested with certainty as gersmere in 1245. Calque of West Frisian De Gaastmar, derived in turn from Old Frisian gers (“grass”) and mere (“body of water, watercourse”). The first element was gradually reinterpreted to gaast (“elevated sandy land”). Compare Geestdorp.
