From Old Norse Finnmǫrk (“Finnmark”), first part from finn, finnar (“Sami person”). Last part mǫrk (“forest, woodland, borderland”), from Proto-Germanic *markō (“border, boundary, area”), from Proto-Indo-European *morǵ- (“edge, boundary, border”).
