Finland Proper
English
Etymology
Calque of Finnish Varsinais-Suomi, named so because the term Suomi (“Finland”) originally referred only to this region.
Usage notes
The term "Southwest Finland" is currently used by Finnish government sources. "Finland Proper" tends to more often refer to the historical province rather than the modern region.
