- (politics) Originally, a youthful libertarian, anti-communist party founded in 1988 by young democrats (hence its original name) in Hungary. Over the period 1992–1995, it changed its position from liberal to conservative, reflected in the term polgári (“civic”) in its current name Fidesz – Magyar Polgári Szövetség (“Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance”).
