Etymology

Based upon a conjugated definite form of Falan, the name of an area west of the Falu River (still used in 1684), such as Old Swedish Falunne (dative) or Faluna (accusative). The name is related to the adjective fal (grayly/yellowly pale), originally in reference to either this area or the river itself. A river name *Falan might have referred to the color of the water. The name of the area, potentially containing a noun *fala (“pale yellow dryland”), could have been given due to the yellow ochre deposited by Gruvbäcken, or denoted the local thingstead and marketplace of the Kopparberg region.

Attested since 1400 as Old Swedish (oppa) Falene.
