From Middle High German vere, from Old High German *fera, from Proto-Germanic *farjǭ (ferry), derived from *farjaną (to bring, carry), the causative form of *faraną (to travel), whence German fahren. Akin to Dutch veer, English ferry, Danish færge and Swedish färja.
