From Middle High German vere, from Old High German *fera, from Proto-Germanic *farjǭ (“ferry”), derived from *farjaną (“to bring, carry”), the causative form of *faraną (“to travel”), whence German fahren. Akin to Dutch veer, English ferry, Danish færge and Swedish färja.
