Empe

Dutch
Etymology
First attested as suthempe in 1046. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps a tautological compound of Proto-Germanic *ama- (“current, stream”) and Old Dutch *apa (“river, current”). The first element Old Dutch sut (“south”) used to distinguish the settlement from Noord-Empe gradually disappeared.
