First attested as Eestergae in 1505. Likely derived from a compound of Old Frisian ees (farmland next to a village) or ā (watercourse, river) and (village, village area). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier variant of the Frisian name. Compare Eestrum.
