- Either an Anglicized form of Scottish Gaelic Dùghall or a reduced form of McDougall.
- As a French Canadian surname, from the personal name Tugal, a name of Germanic origin, from the name Tugwald, composed of *tug (“useful”) (compare *togōn (“to draw, pull”)) + *wald (“authority, power”).
- As a French surname, from du (“of the”) + the personal name Gal, both from gal (“rooster”) (from Latin gallus) and the Latin name Gallus.
- Borrowed from Punjabi ਦੁੱਗਲ (duggal); this surname is more often spelt Duggal.
