From Russian Донба́сс (Donbáss), abbreviation of Доне́цкий бассе́йн (Donéckij basséjn, “Donets Basin”), after Доне́ц (Donéc, “Donets River”) + бассе́йн (basséjn, “basin”). Compare Donbas, from Ukrainian.
