Etymology

First attested as dintre in 1139. Etymology unknown. Several compound derivations have been proposed, ranging from a compound of Old Dutch *dint (“strike, blow”) and heri (“sandy ridge”) to a derivation from Old Dutch Dindo (“a personal name”) with an unknown second element and a derivation from Latin dent (“dent, blow”). None of these proposed etymologies fit the oldest attestation. Currently part of the twin village of Heeswijk-Dinther.
