Etymology

Attested as COCKSDORP (DE) in 1841. From de Cock (“a surname”) +‎ -s- +‎ dorp (“village, settlement”). Named after Nicolaas Josephus de Cock (1804-1848), a shipowner who founded a company to develop the land around the settlement in 1835.
