Etymology

Attested as COCKSDORP (DE) in 1841. From de Cock (a surname) + -s- + dorp (village, settlement). Named after Nicolaas Josephus de Cock (1804-1848), a shipowner who founded a company to develop the land around the settlement in 1835.
