First attested as casterle in 1231. Etymology uncertain. The most probable etymology is a compound of Middle Dutch *caster (“type of tree”) and lo (“light forest”). Less-likely, alternative derivations include a compound of Latin castra (“army camp”) and lo (“light forest”) or a compound of Middle Dutch caste (“granary, storehouse”) and either herel (“small sandy ridge”) or lo (“light forest”).
