- Borrowed from French Bur, probably a short form of an ancient Germanic personal name.
- Borrowed from Alemannic German Bur (“peasant, farmer”) and Low German Bur (“peasant, farmer”).
- Borrowed from Slovak Búr, a surname of unexplained origin.
