From Middle High German bodem, from Old High German bodam, from Proto-Germanic *butmaz, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰmḗn.
Cognate with German Boden, Dutch bodem, English bottom, Icelandic botn, Swedish botten. The (partial) synonym Fong is also derived from the same Indo-European root, but was re-borrowed into Luxembourgish from French (via Latin).
