Brzeźce

Polish

Etymology

Earlier spellings of these village names include Brzescze, Bresscze, Brzeście, etc., showing a derivation from Proto-Slavic *berstьje (elm forest), from *berstъ (elm). Respellings with -ź- from the 19th century onwards arise by association with brzeg (coast, shore, riverbank), referencing the locations of these villages adjacent to rivers and lakes.[1][2] Doublet of Brześć, Brześce, Brzeście, Brzeszcze, Brzyście, and brzost.
