First attested as borglo in 960. Potentially a compound of Dutch borg (“fortified settlement, castle”) and lo (“light forest”). An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Proto-Germanic *burgôn (“type of tree”). Compare Borculo, Borkel en Schaft, Bulkenaar, Schipborg and Westerbork.
