     Mother collapsed by the chest and fell into a swoon. Sister screamed. I jumped out of bed, and Đokica did too. We sat down on the floor by her, and kissed her hand. She put her hand on my head and whispered something. Then she leapt up, kindled a brand and lit the lamp before the icon of St. George. “Come, children, and pray to God to deliver us from temptation,” she said. Her voice rang out like a bell, and her eyes shone like the evening star in the heavens.
