Etymology

Berkel is first attested as berkel in 1266. Rodenrijs is first attested as roderinse in 1130-1161. Berkel is derived from a compound of Middle Dutch berc (“birch, Betula sp.”) and lo (“light forest”). Rodenrijs is derived from a compound of an inflected form of Old Dutch rōt (“red”) and risa (“young branch, brushwood”). Formerly two independent villages.
