Attested as Bregantinos since the 9th century;[1] either from Latin Brigantīnōs (people of Brigantium),[2] from Proto-Celtic *Brigantī, or directly from Proto-Celtic *brigantīnos (king) (compare Old Welsh brennin, brennhin).[3]
