First attested as berenwerde in 1179. Compound of Middle Dutch Berewout (“a personal name”) and werde (“land next to water, riverine island, polder complex surrounded by water”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to werder (“island, riverside land”).
The neighbourhood is named after the hamlet.
