Bartelsluis
Dutch
Etymology
Compound of Bartel (“a personal name”) and sluis (“lock, sluice”). The hamlet is named after a sluice which created a good deal of unrest when it was built. The cornerstone of the sluice has a satirical poem carved into it. This turned the sluice into something of a tourist attraction, much to the joy of a local innkeeper, a certain Bartel.
