Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic بَامِيَة (bāmiya) and its descendants. In the 19th century contact with the adjacent Ottoman Empire was a more likely source of acquaintance with the plant than international trade being fast enough to introduce the term Okra for the perishable fruits.
