Etymology
Borrowed from Ancient Greek Ἀττίλα (Attíla), of uncertain further origin. Usually derived from East Germanic: Gothic or Gepidic 𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌰 (atta, “father”) + -𐌹𐌻𐌰 (-ila), "little father". Related to Old English Ætla and Old Norse Atli. Possibly Gothicized Turkic *es (“great, old”), and *t il (“sea, ocean”), *attíl- (< *etsíl < *es tíl) with the meaning "the oceanic, universal ruler". Also Turkic *āt (horse), and *atli (“horseman, cavalier”).
