Etymology
First attested as dat dorpe 't gene hoit in 1381. Compound of a dialectal form of Arnold (“a personal name”), the definite article ge and hout (“rising deciduous forest”). The personal name was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from Kleingenhout.
